On Eschatology

The word Eschatology comes from the Greek word ESCHATA, meaning “Last things”, and LOGOS, “study”. Eschatology is a study of death, the end of human life on earth. It is a study of the state of death, of Christ’s second coming and error of millennialism, of the resurrection of all the dead, of the end of the world, of the final Judgment, of eternal damnation in hell and of eternal life in heaven.

When a person dies, only his body dies. His soul does not die. Temporal death, or death in world, is the separation of the soul from the body ( Lk. 12:20; Mt 27:50; Ecc 12:7). The cause of death is sin (Ge 2:17; 3:19; Ro6:23;Jas 1:15). And it is God alone who decides when a sinful man must die (PS 90:3-9). No one can escape death. Because all have sinned, all must die ( Ro 5:12). Enock ( Ge 5;24) and Elijah (2 Ki 2:11) were the only exceptions. Although Christians, too, must die, death is for them a blessing and not a curse. For them the sting of death has been taken away (1 Cor 15:55-57). The Bible speaks of their death as a blessed sleep in Jesus (1 Th 4:13-14; Lk 23:43), a peaceful departing from this world ( Lk 2:29), a deliverance from the problems of this life ( 2 Ti 4:18).

The body of man returns to dust ( Ge 3:19), where it remains until the Last day ( Jn 11:24). The soul continues to live on until it is united again with the body on the Last day ( Jn 5:28-29). The souls of believers immediately enter into the joy of heaven (Lk 23:43). They are with Christ (Php 1:23-24).? The souls or spirits of unbelievers go to prison called hell ( 1 Pe 3:19-20), where they suffer torment ( Lk 16:23). The departed souls remain in heaven or hell until the Day of Judgment, when they are reunited with their bodies. We firmly believe, teach, and confess that Jesus Christ is coming again: “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go,” (Ac 1:11).

The second coming of Christ will be in such a way that all people will see him come with power and great glory ( Mt 24:30). All His holy angels will with him ( Mt 25:31). All people shall know at once who he is. At his second coming our savior will separate the wicked from the just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats ( Mt 13:49; Mt 25:32-33). Before all the nations and all the people he will declare his final Judgment. All true believers will enter into eternal life, and all unbelievers will go into everlasting punishment of hell ( Mt 25:31-48). Christ will come at the end of the world. the Last day ( Jn 6:40). God has appointed this day (Ac 17:31), but no one knows about the day or hour ( Mk 13:32). We do not know the exact time, but God wants us to ready always ( Mt 24:42-51). We confess in the APOSTLES’ Creed: ” l believe in resurrection of the body”. ( Mt 22:31-32; 1 Cor 15:42-49; 1 Th 4:14-17).
